Safety Tempered Glass Tops for Fish Tank Coffee
Table Aquariums
The glass top is the most expensive item
for most of the Coffee Table Aquarium fish tanks we carry. Since
it is the most visible item on a Coffee Table Aquarium, shouldn't
it be the most important in the way of quality? All of our glass
tops are made in the USA to our exact specifications. This assures
our customers of getting the highest clarity glass.
All
of our Coffee Table Aquariums come with a 3/8-inch (10-mm) tempered
glass top. The tempering makes it a "Safety" glass like
they use for cars. The edge around the glass top is rounded slightly
to give it a smooth and nice looking edge (as seen on this image).
Do you know what the quality standard
for "Flat Glass" is? You stand back 13-feet and if you
don't see a scratch the glass is good. While this may be acceptable
to others is not good enough for us. Our suppliers are aware of
our higher than normal quality requirements and they deliver above
average quality. Nobody's aquarium glass tops are better than ours.
The top does not need to be removed when
feeding the fish. For cleaning, one person can remove the top (the
majority of our tops are around 35 pounds), but two people make
it easier. How often do you need to remove the top? After about
a month the underside of the glass top will get noticeably foggy
from the nearby water. If you have hard water it will build up quicker.
Figure on cleaning twice a month. Usually the top gets dirty from
drinking cups faster than the bottom does from the water. We clean
the top side first then flip it over and clean the new top side.
Very quick and easy.
The most common problems seen on glass
tops over a fish tank is condensation. When using an aquarium heater
the water temperature usually is warmer than the outside air (and
the glass top). This causes a mini rainforest with water droplets
collecting on the underside of the coffee table glass top. The cure
is not to use a heater. We have keep several types of tropical fish
all year round in Chicago and northern Ohio. During winters the
room temperature varies between 68 and 71 degrees and never once
have we needed a heater. On cold nights we leave the lights under
the gravel on to keep the water a little warmer. When picking fish
be sure to stay away from the species that require very warm water.
Goldfish are by far the easiest to keep. We use Guppies, Swordtails,
Platys, Mollies, and Corydora catfish all year round.
Using an air stone or bubbler will cause
the underside of the fish tank's glass top to get dirty. The popping
of the bubbles on the water surface sprays the bottom of the glass
top. After a few million bubbles (less than an hour) you will notice
it. As long as you don't have to many fish they do not need any
air injected into the water.
